Ghosts of Ma'iingan

I am a mixed media artist working with collage since 1967. I graduated from Rhode Island School of Design, continued graduate work at Pratt University and New York University. In 1969 I merged my artistic background with my passion for wild animals by creating Wildlife Education Program and Design. For the last 42 years worked at both painting and my international efforts for rational understanding and conservation of wolves, canids, and other predators. I continue to present programs throughout the United States (no longer with live wolves) but now with a large historical and scientific display.

This contribution to the Book of Death emerges from my despair over the continuing destruction of predators, and in particular the coyote and the wolf. Despair because we are about to repeat the same antiquated intense and cruel extermination programs.

Janice holds a BFA from Oregon State University with a concentration in graphic design. She has had a graphic design practice in Colorado for many years and began to seriously explore her interest in collage about ten years ago.

Along the way, she studied collage in Dale Chisman’s abstract painting class at the Art Students League of Denver and worked with collagist Jonathan Talbot in New York. Her unusual technique is the result of many influences and years of experimentation.

Janice’s work has been included in an International Collage Exhibition at Kansas State University, a solo show, “Re-Purposed,” at Denver's Edge Gallery in 2009, and in juried exhibitions around the US and throughout the world. She is a signature member of the National Collage Society and helps moderate an online collage group that is sponsored by the International Museum of Collage, Assemblage, and Construction.

About the image: A symbolic visual inquiry into this/that causality

SHORT BIO: Peter Ciccariello is an interdisciplinary, cross-genre artist, poet, photographer and flaneur. His work is an experiment of language and text co-existing in 3-D digital environments. He works at the boundary between order and chaos, meaning and incoherence, logic and absurdity.

His creative method draws from Postmodern ideas about fragmentation, serendipity, and truth as a contrived illusion. As a self described interdisciplinary, cross-genre artist, poet, and photographer, his work is a pastiche of visual elements and sometimes language, imported into 3-D digital environments where the resultant images are choreographed utilizing theatrical lighting, staging and object characterization. Realized and instantiated as original limited edition prints, Ciccariello’s work utilizes progressive technology and classic process approaches that exploit the interplay between the virtual and the real.

Recent work has appeared both in print & online in, amongst other places, Harvard University in Boston, MA, MOCA The Museum of Computer Art in New York City, Brown University, Providence, RI, Poetry Magazine, and most recently, at the Abbaye de Neumünster, Cloître, Luxembourg. His book "Imaginal Landscapes", an experiment with the poem in landscape as it relates to poetic geography was published by Xexoxial Editions. After the thyroidectomy, when I was put on Levothyroxine to replace my thyroid hormone, I remember wondering if I would still be me on this little white daily pill, seeing that it's such an essential key hormone. As if she sensed my unvoiced concern, the doctor explained that my body would not be able to notice that the hormone was available from another source (digestion) than the thyroid....I thought, but I'll know...I wondered if I'd lose my colors, so to speak, if my personality would change, if my base mood (calm, dark maybe, prone to depression and serious) would be different...Four years later, my colors are more vibrant than ever, my base mood is (generally) up, my character hasn't changed per se...so I'm wondering now if my darker take on life before was perhaps cancer related. And maybe now I'm more me than I ever was.
